Adding Google Analytics to your Joomla Site

A step-by-step guide on installing Analytics to Joomla

As part of our regular updates on how to use Google Analytics, roi.com.au are offering guidance on exactly how to implement the Google Analytics code to your website so that you can start monitoring the performance of your site in measurable data. Today we will focus on adding Google Analytics to a Joomla site.

Firstly, what is Joomla? Joomla is a free content management system for publishing content, namely websites and web-pages on the internet. The latest version of Joomla, 1.6.0 was released earlier this month but makes no difference for the purposes of this exercise.

Adding Google Analytics code to your Joomla Site

If you have a Joomla site, you will need your site’s FTP login details – if you don’t have these, get them from your web developer.  Then follow the process below to add Google Analytics to your site:

1.     Log in to your site’s FTP using FTP Client, Filezilla or similar application
2.    Navigate to your web root file (named www.webroot, Httpdocs or similar)
3.    Through the presented folders, find templates then installed templates, then active template which should include a file labelled index.php
4.    Edit this file by opening in Dreamweaver, Notepad, Notepad ++ or similar application
5.    In the file find body tag (CTRL F to find) and paste your Google Analytics code immediately before your tag.
6.    Save the changes and upload to your FTP.

Once this process is complete, Google Analytics will be active on your site within 24 hours. Through the dashboard of your Google Analytics account you will be able to access a vast amount of data presented in various tables and graphs which can be customised to suit your own requirements.

The exact scope and depth to which Google Analytics can assist your business is limitless but the immediate impact it can have comes in the form of determining exactly what works and doesn’t. You will be able to see what your worst and best performing keywords are; which landing pages work and which don’t and a host of more useful statistics.

It is important to note however, that Google Analytics works bet through analysis of trends and not individual stats or metrics. Jumping to rash conclusions based on initial impressions is the first mistake and it can prove costly.

We recommend that you gradually familiarise yourself with Google Analytics and how it works. It will work away from the moment it is implemented, so there is no need to try to get the most out of the tool in the first few days – it’s true value will become apparent over time.
