Don’t know your SERP from your SEO? Can’t understand the terminology on your traffic report? The world of SEO is full of technical jargon that could overwhelm anybody wanting to break into the industry. That’s why roi.com.au has come up with a list of the most common SEO terms that you may come across while growing your business online with us:

301 Redirect: The method of permanently redirecting an old webpage to a new location..

Above the Fold: The area of a webpage that you can see without having to scroll down.

Anchor Tag: An HTML tag that allows you to create a link to another web page within the current web page.

CPA: Cost Per Acquisition. This is a fee paid to an affiliate marketer for driving a particular action or event on your site.

Domain: The main web address of your site (example: www.yoursite.com).

Internal Link A link from one page to another on the same website, such as from your homepage to your contact page.

Keywords: Words that are used by search engines to determine the topic of a given web page.

Meta Tags: 150 characters of descriptive information that helps a search engine identify the purpose and topic of a given web page.

Organic rankings: These are search results from sites that have not paid for its rankings and are entirely dependent on how they met the guidelines established by a search engine.

PPC: Pay Per Click. This is an advertising method where an advertiser pays for their ads (which are displayed on a given website), if and only if someone actually clicks on the ad.

SEO: This stands for Search Engine Optimisation. This is the practice of modifying a website to improve its visibility among organic or unpaid search results from search engines. The aim for businesses is to get their site to show up on the first page of a search result.

Title Tag: This is the actual “title” of a given webpage. The title is what shows up in the top bar of your browser. It is also the hyperlink that shows in search engine results listings.
