How Google’s Next Panda Update Will Affect Your Small Business

A review of Google’s introduction of Panda updates

Firstly, Google Panda refers to a series of updates in the Google algorithms which impact webpage rankings on results pages. Panda started coming into effect on February 24, 2011 and there have been Panda updates and/or data refreshes almost every month since.

According to Webmasters’ estimates, over 20% of websites were significantly affected by the change in Google’s formulas when Panda first rolled out. Many websites who were ranking in the top 10 search results for selected keywords were suddenly ranking number 200 or greater! This greatly affected the success of countless online businesses, many of them were small businesses.

This does not mean that Google has manipulated search engine results to punish the weak for no reason at all. The Panda update actually makes a lot of sense and generally helps the user find what they are looking for more efficiently. It simply penalises shallow content and improves rankings for a great number of high-quality websites. It seems to have favoured big companies however, making it difficult for small businesses to establish themselves as high-ranking quality websites according to Google.

What you can expect from the next Panda update

According to Matt Cutts, Google’s Webspam team leader, the next significant Panda update is expected to be softer on small businesses. While it doesn’t necessarily mean rankings lost from the original Panda update are going to be automatically restored, it does mean that you will have a fighting chance amongst the big brands unlike before. It is likely that your small business’ website will be able to establish authority by following the quality guidelines below.

6 ways to rank highly with Google’s Panda update

To make the most of Google’s Panda updates, it is important to monitor the quality of your website’s content in order to gain trust and authority from the reader and Google. Follow the steps outlined below to be rewarded by Google and build the success of your business!

  1. Create content primarily for users – it should be concise and easily readable
  2. Consolidate similar articles into one comprehensive webpage
  3. Remove low quality or redundant webpages
  4. Don’t stuff content with keywords – use them wisely and somewhat sparingly
  5. Consolidate Web properties
  6. Limit ads on webpages – especially ads above-the-fold interfering with content

It is important to note that nothing is certain with Google, so although there are always new pieces of information being filtered to Webmasters, media and subsequently internet users, you can’t expect definite outcomes from Google. It has been proven however, that the best way to build the success of your website and your business as a whole, is to ensure your website offers the most useful and relevant information for your customers/readers, organised in a practical manner.
