SEO – Search engine rankings got you down? (Part 2)

Ready for more possible explanations for your site’s sudden downward slide in the search engine rankings? Here’s the second set of the most likely reasons your site is underperforming in the search engines.

What SEO strategies are available at ROI?

6. The rug gets pulled out from under you. The search engines are constantly changing the way they evaluate web content. If a search engine switches up the algorithms it uses to assess your site’s pages, there’s a good chance your ranking will change. Unfortunately, you have no control over what the search engines do with their spiders. However, you must carefully monitor what you are able to control: your site. Make sure you’re keeping up with good SEO practices, and you’ll always be prepared to make necessary changes to deal with new algorithms.

A side note about this, though: Don’t overreact and rush out to change your whole SEO campaign based on a few algorithm variations. There’s a chance your site may rebound on its own, so wait for another round of updates before making changes.

7. Let the punishment fit the crime. If you’re making use of shady SEO tactics to get your site higher in search engine rankings, beware of the consequences. Webpages with underhanded SEO methods such as keyword stuffing, invisible text, cloaking, or automated linking run the risk of being discovered by search engines. These pages are usually moved down in the rankings, or may even be removed from the search engine indexes entirely. Unethical use of SEO is not worth potential repercussions, and its benefits are typically short-lived.

8. New kids on the block. While much of the activity that takes place online activity is indefinable, you can be certain of at least one thing: There will always be new websites, and some of them may be using your keywords, making them more competitive.

9. Irrelevance can really bring you down. If your webpages are found to be irrelevant to the keywords you’re using, you’ll be bumped down the rankings sure as anything. The reason for this is simple. Search engines want to make their clients happy, and users are generally not happy when they search for, say, a site about remote controls, and they are directed to a site about remote control cars. So if you’re not pleasing search engine users, you’re not going to be making the search engines happy and the negative results will follow accordingly.

10. The straw that breaks the camel’s backlink. If there’s a sudden change in the amount of backlinks to your website, chances are the spiders will pick up on that. This backlink discrepancy can occur if some of your paid links expire, or if new ones appear out of the blue. Using automated links makes your site look like spam, so try to get organically generated links, which don’t fluctuate nearly as much as paid links.

So there you have it: the top ten reasons your site might be losing its SEO rankings. Pay attention to these aspects of your site, and you’ll be able to retain your good ranking.
