How to claim an existing Google Places listing

Google Places accounts for somewhere in the region of 20% of searches made in Google since the integration of Places into the organic search engine results listings in late 2010. Claiming a Places listing can work better than creating a new one

There are two options for businesses looking to get listed on Google Places – create a new listing or claim an existing listing. An existing listing for your businesses may have been established for quite some time, so claiming this listing is likely to be a more favourable option than creating a new one. You can also claim a listing as part of the creation process, if any of the details of the pre-existing Google Places listing are inconsistent with your business.

To claim your Google Places listing simply follow these few instructions:

  • Navigate to your unclaimed place page and click on the button in the top right hand corner labelled “Business owner?”
  • Log into your Google/Gmail account that you would like to claim the map into.
  • Three options will be available, choose the option “Edit my business information” and continue.
  • Fill out all your business information and click submit at the bottom of the page.
  • Verify the map either by phone or by mail. By phone allows instant verification whereas mail verification can take up to a month.

Now that you have claimed your map you will be able to easily change any of the details and will be able to keep track of visitors to your website and Google Places listing through the Google Analytics interface.
