Is your website placement in Google search results all that important?

This really shouldn’t even be a question, in my opinion. Google’s influence in the search engine industry is unparalleled, and its growth shows no signs of stopping anytime in the near future. According to’s statistics on the top search providers for August 2009, Google dominates the field with 64.6% of all searches, or 6,986,580 performed during the month. Even more astonishing, that number is a 2.9% increase from the month before, even though the numbers are already staggering. Therefore, high SEO rankings within Google are what every reputable SEO strives for.

With that many people using Google to search for information, products, and services, can you really afford not to pay attention to your rankings within Google’s search results? Every time a user queries the search engine, Google comes up with a list of webpages in an order determined by proprietary algorithms. This list, also known as the search engine results pages (SERPs), is sorted into pages, ten links to a page, not including paid search results. Common wisdom holds that the webpage with its link at the top of the first page will get the most hits, followed by the second result, and so on down the first page. Results on the second and page get significantly fewer clicks, mostly due to the fact that web users have an extremely short attention span, and expect answers quickly.

Getting the coveted Google top ranking for popular keywords is no easy feat, though. There are so many factors that contribute to Google’s ranking algorithm, and those algorithms are in no way dormant; in fact, they change often. However, this doesn’t mean there’s no point in trying to boost your site’s placement in Google’s SEO results.

Generating incoming links to your site is one of the best ways to move up in the SERPs. More incoming links is doubly beneficial, since you get more visits from people clicking on those links, and the Google PageRank of each respective page will go up due to an increase in incoming links. And the closer you get to the top of the SERPs, the better.
