Google Officially Announce Ads Below Organic Search

New Ad Placement is the Latest Change to Google SERPs

Google have officially announced that AdWords will now display below organic search results as well as the traditional placement above and beside the organic Google results.

Since June, Google have been working feverishly on a new and improved user search experience with a whole host of changes to how search engine results pages are displayed including changes to Google Places listings, website previews and the use of more striking and visually appealing colours.

We have all seen many experimental changes come and go over the course of the last few months but AdWords ads appearing at the bottom of organic Google search results is the latest change to be made permanent.

In their announcement, Google have stated that the new look search results pages are optimised to improve the user experience and noted that ads may appear below search results “in some cases”. To what extent this means at this point is anyone’s guess.

Another question worth asking is – what are these ad positions? Are they position 4 and 5 or 9,10, 11 etc?

What does this mean for Australian businesses?

The new ad placement is likely to more in terms of opportunity to appear on the first page of Google – however it’s difficult to tell if the ads will display at the top, side and bottom of the SERP all at the same time. What next from Google – are they likely to display ads in the middle of organic search results?

What it is more likely to be affected by the change is the click through rate (CTR) of ads, so it’s important to be aware of where your ads are displaying – rather than jumping to the conclusion that your ad copy or target keywords might be wrong.

As a result of these changes, the “Top vs. Side” segment report in your AdWords account will soon change to “Top vs. Other” to account for the new ad placement and other ad forms.

From a SEO perspective, the bottom end of the first page has now become more competitive and ensuring that your title tags and meta descriptions is now more important than ever if you want to ensure your organic listing at position 8, 9, 10 gets a better click through rate than the ads that appear below.
