Customer Complaints & Questions #11: Why Is My Google Places Map ‘In Review?’

More and more people are searching for businesses online than any other way, so it’s important that your local business listing can be easily found on Google Maps. If you haven’t already tapped into this opportunity, it’s essential that you do now.

Google Places listings are potentially an easy way to get a number one ranking in Google. Creating a listing takes just a few minutes and won’t cost you a cent. You can include photos and videos; customise categories such as your service area, the types of brands you sell, and even how to find parking. For that extra incentive, you can also include coupons to encourage potential customers. In essence, a Google Places listing is an easy way to maintain an online presence, even if you don’t have a website.

If you have an established Google Places listing, and then you receive a notification saying that it is marked as ‘Pending,’ don’t panic. Simply read the questions and answers below to help identify what has happened.

What does ‘pending’ mean on my listing?

It simply means that your Google Places listing must go through further review by the Google team before it can be shown on their search engine. There is no action necessary on your part – unfortunately, there is nothing you can do about this; you just have to wait it out.

Why is my listing in review?

Your listing contains a term, certain formatting, or other behaviour that may or may not be appropriate, depending on their context. Or, a business or individual has flagged or reported your location for whatever reason. Due to this ambiguity, your listing will require a manual review and assessment before further approval.

How long will it be in review?

Your listing will have automatically been tagged by Google for verification. This is a temporary state, and is expected for terms that require a manual review. This process generally takes four weeks for a listing to be reviewed.

Will this affect my rankings?

While your listing is ‘in review,’ this may affect your already-established rankings. They may temporarily drop due to your map being taken off Google’s search engine. Once Google Places reviews your listing and finds no fault, you will be back up and running in no time.

This Google Places initiative is designed to weed out the businesses that attempt to beat the algorithms by claiming that they have a physical address.
