Effective International SEO

Edited: 12th April 2011

Winning international SEO strategies require a great deal of technical expertise

Many companies in Australia compete to some extent on a global footing. Many websites are created solely to operate on the international market and setting up a multilingual or multi-country website can be a very cost-effective means of investigating the value of expanding into international territory. If your online marketing strategy is to succeed overseas, a robust international search engine optimisation (SEO) strategy is required. There are a number of factors that must be considered before going global including the language, domain extensions, understanding the local market and securing a local hosting service.

Consider International SEO when building your website

You may not see global business as important when you build your website. It’s something to consider at a later date, but setting your website up with international SEO in mind can avoid time-consuming backtracking later on. If international expansion is not a consideration, then it’s not a problem but if you do see your business expanding off-shore in the future, including an international aspect to your SEO and site development is highly important.

Some Helpful International SEO Tips

Optimising your website for global marketing requires a great deal of effort. Best practice will depend on the extent of your international expansion but these tips will at least put you on the right track.

1. Identify the respective language within the Meta tag, i.e.: If the language is French:
<meta name = “language” content = “FR” />

2. Native language content – Have your website content translated into the native language of the country you are targeting. This may be seen as important for multilingual expansion to Asia and Europe but even targeting the US in your global marketing strategy will require subtle tweaking of the language to appeal to the local audience.

3. Use domain extensions of the country –. In order to be perceived as trusted and credible company, the most basic thing to do is to use the domain extensions of the country.
Do not use your Australian URL (.com.au) overseas, but utilise for example: .fr for France, .co.uk for the UK or .cn for China.

4. Increase inbound links from sites of the same country – To increase local rankings across the globe it is important to link from local website in the country you are trying to expand your business into.

5. Think locally – Arrange local contact details. Potential clients may immediately be put off if they realise that they have no local customer service options available to them or lose faith in your service offering if it perceived as ‘foreign’. Also make yourself aware of local expectations – customer behaviour and traditions etc. It may open doors or close them and save you from investing time and money where opportunities are limited.

6. Host locally – Have your new country-specific URL hosted in the relevant country because this will help the search engines in registering your website as a local site in your specific overseas market.
